Two employees at an assisted living facility in Oshawa have been charged in the death of an elderly resident who spent a night outdoors exposed to the elements after she was inadvertently locked out of the building.
Durham Regional Police officers were called to Aspira Traditions of Durham Region at 1255 Bloor Street East on April 1, 2023, after the resident was found unresponsive on a bench outside the facility.
“Paramedics attended and brought the female to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased,” a police release states.
An investigation later revealed that the 79-year-old resident entered a stairwell and exited the building at around 7:30 p.m. the previous night.
“Over the course of the night, the female attempted to gain access to the building but was unable to because the doors were locked,” the release noted. “She sat on a bench and was located the following morning without vital signs.”
An autopsy later determined the woman died as a result of exposure to the elements.
Two employees at the facility, Padmini Kisseur, 34, of Oshawa, and Danika Harrison, 29, of Newcastle, Ont., are charged with criminal negligence causing death and necessities of life and failing to provide to a person under charge.
They were both released on undertakings.
