A Toronto police officer has died after suffering a medical episode while on duty Thursday morning.
Det. John Park, 40, died while executing a robbery search warrant near Jane Street and Steeles Avenue. He is survived by his wife Tina and their two young children, who are nine and five years old.
Park was a 14-year veteran with the Toronto police and had most recently been working with the Hold-Up Squad.
Deputy Police Chief Lauren Pogue said the entire service is devastated at the passing of Park.
“This is heartbreaking news just a few days before Christmas, and there are no words that can express the sorrow we all feel right now.
“Here at the hospital, we spoke with Detective Park’s family. They are understandably devastated by this tragic and sudden loss.
“This is every family’s worst fear when a loved one works as a police officer and does not come home safely after their shift. Detective Park was a wonderful and loving father, and he was appreciated by everyone who knew him at the Toronto Police Service,” said Pogue.
Mayor Olivia Chow said she was heartbroken to learn of the death of a police officer on duty and said she has been in touch with Police Chief Myron Demkiw.
“The Chief advised me that the Toronto Police Service will be officially announcing the details as soon as they can, while respecting the wishes of the officer’s family,” read her statement. “My heartfelt condolences go out to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this painful time. We deeply appreciate the work of our officers and the work they do every day for our city.”
Premier Doug Ford also offered his condolences in a social media post.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear that a Toronto police officer died while on duty earlier today. My condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the officer, as well as all members of the Toronto Police,” read his statement.
