Gardiner Expressway repair work on 5 bridges to start in spring 2025

The City of Toronto says it will be moving on to the next stage of Gardiner Expressway construction in the spring of 2025.
It will include critical repair work on five bridges on section 3 of the expressway which runs from Highway 427 to the Humber River.
Rehabilitation work on that section of the Gardiner was set to take place from 2027 to 2031, but the bridges were identified for an advanced start after a condition assessment noted critical repairs needed to be completed ahead of that timeline.
The province will be funding the replacements of the overpasses at Park Lawn Road and Mimico Creek as well as the westbound on-ramp from Park Lawn Road over Mimico Creek while Toronto will fund the repairs to the Kipling Avenue and Islington Avenue bridges over the Gardiner.
The province’s commitment is part of the deal for Ontario to upload the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway.
The contract of the bridge repairs will be advertised in early January so work can begin in the spring, but construction will be paused from May to July 2026 to accommodate the increased traffic during the FIFA World Cup.
It’s expected to be completed by December 2026.
As for lane closures, the westbound Gardiner from Park Lawn Road to Mimico Creek will be reduced from four lanes to three for one year. Park Lawn Road, where it passes under the expressway, will be reduced to a single lane for a two-month period in each direction.
Kipling and Islington will be reduced from six lanes to four lanes where they pass over the Gardiner for around eight months.
There will also be a full closure of Park Lawn Road on-ramp to the westbound Gardiner from Nov. 2025 to April 2026.
