TTC free on New Year’s Eve, Union Station subway access to be restricted

The TTC will once again be free on New Years Eve to make sure everyone returns home safely from their festivities.

Toronto will be hosting its annual celebration in the Harbourfront area with festivities set to kick off at 11:45 p.m. and conclude by 1 a.m.

The eastbound lanes of Queens Quay West between Bathurst Street and Lower Sherbourne Street will be closed vehicular traffic from 10 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Those heading home from Union Station will also face some restrictions heading into the station.

Starting at midnight on New Years Day, subway riders will only be able to enter the station through the doors on Bay Street, just south of Front Street.

The TTC says it is anticipating the station will be very busy and those traveling from downtown are asked to consider using St. Andrew, Osgoode, King and Queen stations as alternatives.

There will also be extra service on Lines 1 and 2, starting at 10 p.m. and subway service will continue until 3 a.m.

There will also be special New Year’s Eve express buses operating from Jarvis Street and Queen Quay East, northbound to Sherbourne Station, on Line 2, from 12 to 2 a.m., Jan. 1. Buses will arrive every five minutes.

The TTC will be free from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 8 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, Metrolinx says the GO Train and UP will also be free from 7 p.m. on New Years Eve until 8 a.m. on Jan. 1.

There will be additional trips on the UP Express and across several GO train lines.
