Driver charged after girl, 13, struck and killed while riding bike in Ajax last November

Durham Regional Police have charged a driver after a 13-year-old girl was struck and killed while riding a bicycle in Ajax last November.

It happened on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, on Stevensgate Drive near Rossland Road West.

“It was reported that a black 2020 Hyundai Sante Fe was turning from Stevensgate Drive onto Rossland Road West when it struck a cyclist riding westbound through a marked crossride,” a police release explained.

“The rider of the bicycle, a 13-year-old female from Ajax was fatally injured as a result of the collision.”

Investigators say the driver, a 44-year-old Ajax woman, was uninjured and remained on scene.

On Monday, Jan. 13, she was charged with careless driving causing death.

Police did not name the suspect.
