Dangerous offender residing in Toronto while on statutory release, police say

A man who was found to be a dangerous offender is currently residing in Toronto after being released from prison on statutory release.

Simon Gares was originally convicted of assault causing bodily harm in 2019 and found to be a dangerous offender.

He was subject to a long-term supervision order and a lifetime weapons ban. He was convicted of breaching his long-term supervision order in 2024 and has been in prison until now.

As of March 14, he is residing in a community-based residential facility and will be under numerous conditions including not being able to enter drinking establishments, not being able to consume alcohol and he is not to consume drugs.

Gares is also required to follow a treatment plan arranged by a parole supervisor.

The Toronto police is notifying the public about Grave because of his “demonstrated risk to the community, including children.”

A chief of police or his designate is able to disclose personal information if he reasonably believes the individual poses a significant risk of harm to other persons or property.

This is the second time police have warned the public of his release from prison. Gares was previously convicted of two counts of threatening death, theft, and assault with intent to resist arrest and was released from prison in 2015.

Toronto police notified the public then because of his “potential to violently reoffend.”

They added during an investigation, Gares allegedly made non-specific threats related to the safety of children attending elementary schools.
