Downed hydro pole knocked out power for hundreds in Scarborough

Hundreds of Toronto Hydro customers were in the dark on Wednesday morning after a car took out a hydro pole, sparking a grass fire.

The car struck the pole on Canadian Road, near Warden Avenue and Ellesmere Road, around 3 a.m. and caused a chain reaction.

The wires caused the fence to be electrified and that sparked numerous grass fires, knocking power out for some Scarborough residents.

The driver is facing possible charges for impaired driving.

Ellesmere south to Lawrence from Warden to Kennedy Road was affected, Toronto Hydro said.

Hydro crews should have power restored to the remaining customers around 3 p.m., according to the utility.
