Zidane set for director role with Real Madrid

MADRID, Spain — Former France great Zinedine Zidane says he will be Real Madrid’s new sporting director as of Monday.

The former Real Madrid player, a three-time world footballer of the year, was quoted as saying “yes, I think so, I will be sporting director and I’m happy about it.”

Zidane, who was an adviser to president Florentino Perez, isn’t sure of the full scope of his responsibilities but says “the important thing is that I’m already with Real Madrid.”

Perez fired former sporting director Jorge Valdano in May following a season-long feud between him and coach Jose Mourinho.

Zidane says “Mourinho has been fundamental” in getting him the job, which sees the former World Cup winner take on a major role in the club’s reshuffled structure.
