Extradition of Cdn suspect in U.S. child porn case up to justice minister

A justice ministry spokeswoman says one of two Canadians wanted in the U.S. on child pornography charges has already been cleared for extradition by the courts.

Paul Graham Fry and Brandon William Lane are among 72 people indicted in the U.S. on charges of allegedly participating in an international child pornography network.

Carole Saindon says a London, Ont., court ordered Fry committed to custody on May 19 to await an extradition decision from Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.

Officials would not say if Fry has been extradited or if Nicholson has approved the extradition.

Fry was arrested Dec. 2 in Waterloo, Ont., the same day that Lane was arrested in Kingston, Ont., where he is to appear in court on Aug. 19.

According to a U.S. indictment released Wednesday, Lane and Fry are charged with engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to advertise the distribution of child pornography, and conspiracy to distribute child pornography.

The U.S. justice department alleges numerous participants in the network sexually abused children aged 12 and under, produced images and video of the abuse and then shared it with other members of an online bulletin board called Dreamworld.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called the called the activity a “nightmare” for the children and said that some of the children featured in the images and videos were just infants.
