TORONTO — Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who helped the Montreal Alouettes earn their first win in three games, was named the CFL’s offensive player of the week Tuesday.

Calvillo completed 30-of-36 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown as Montreal beat the Toronto Argonauts 36-23. Calvillo also broke Damon Allen’s all-time CFL completions record of 5,158 with an 18-yard strike to Brandon London in the first quarter.

B.C. Lions’ linebacker Solomon Elimimian was named the top defensive player. He had 12 tackles and a sack as the Lions earned their first win of the season, a 24-11 decision over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Larry Taylor of the Calgary Stampeders captured special-teams honours. He returned four punts for 63 yards and added two kickoff returns for 58 yards in a 32-20 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Edmonton Eskimos tailback Jerome Messam was the top Canadian. He ran for 50 yards on eight carries and added four catches for 31 yards in a 28-16 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Last week, Messam was named the CFL’s Canadian player for the month of July.

The weekly CFL awards are sponsored by Gibson’s Finest.
