CHAMPERY, Switzerland — Canada won two bronze medals Sunday in the final day of competition at the mountain bike world championships.

Claire Buchar of Whistler, B.C., won a bronze medal in the Elite women’s category, finishing 28 seconds behind the winner, Emmeline Ragot of France. Rachel Atherton of Britain won the silver medal.

Buchar didn’t have a lot of preparation for the race but found inspiration in the form of a friend back home.

“I didn’t race any World Cups this year because we didn’t have the budget,” Buchar said. “But I came here with great motivation. A good friend in Canada, Nick Geddes, is in the hospital with leukemia, so us Canadians wore yellow shoelaces to show our support. And every time I thought it was tough out there I thought of Nick.

“So this one’s for you. Nick for the win.”

In the junior women’s category, the defending champion Lauren Rosser of Squamish, B.C., finished third, 17 seconds behind Manon Carpenter of Britain. Agnes Delest of France won the silver medal.

“My run was all right. I had a lot of crashes because it’s really slick. But it’s a good course and it’s really challenging,” said Rosser.
