RIM’s BBM service experiences outage

Research In Motion Ltd.’s popular BlackBerry Messenger service experienced connection issues Friday, with users complaining at lightening speed on Twitter about an apparent outage.

Officials from Waterloo, Ont.-based RIM couldn’t be reached immediately for comment on Friday morning.

But the company tweeted using its BlackBerryHelp account that: “Some Canada & LatAm customers report BBM issues. Our support teams are investigating. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Wireless service provider Rogers said on Twitter via its @RogersBuzz account: “We have received reports that RIM is experiencing a network issue. We do not have further details at this time.”

A spokesman for Bell said some of its BBM users were being affected, but provided no further details.

Numerous Twitter users told CityNews via Twitter that they were experiencing BBM issues.

Maria Djac tweeted, “yess! BBM has been acting up since last night!”

Jay Byrd tweeted, “BBM Down? ABSOLUTELY! it’s been at least 2+ hours now.”
 
It wasn’t a great day all around for RIM. The company’s stock plunged more than 20 per cent on Friday morning after reporting lower-than-expected second quarter profits and sales.

Shares dropped as low as $22.14 on the Toronto Stock Exchange with at least 10 million shares changing hands on Friday. They closed down $5.90 to $23.50 o Friday.

Profits fell 58 per cent to $329 million US in the quarter, RIM said.
