It was a meaningless game they were playing for pride.
With Poland and Costa Rica both knowing they were going home after the match, they still gave it a good effort at the World Cup on Tuesday.
In the end, the Europeans won this consolation prize by a 2-1 margin.
Bartosz Bosacki netted both goals for the Poles, who overcame a deficit when Costa Rican striker Ronald Gomez scored in the 25th minute. His left-footed free kick sailed past goalkeeper Artur Boruc for a lead that wouldn’t last long.
Bosacki celebrated his first tally just eight minutes later and kicked in number two in the 66th minute.
It was another one of those widely-told sports moments – Bosacki wasn’t even on coach Pawel Janas’ 23-man roster, and only joined the team after Damian Gorawski dropped out due to illness and injury.
Both sides had other opportunities but neither could get the ball past the respective netminders.
It was déjà vu for the Poles – they won their last game at the 2002 World Cup only after already being eliminated from the tournament with two straight losses.
