A number of planes were diverted from Pearson International Airport on Thursday afternoon after a fire alarm was activated in the air traffic control tower.
Flights operated by Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat were rerouted to Hamilton after the alarm was triggered around 3:15 p.m.
“As a precaution, we did have to reduce arriving and departing traffic for safety reasons,” spokeswoman Siobhan Desroches told CityNews.
“The tower was evacuated as a precaution.”
When first responders arrived, they found no fire and allowed workers back inside around 4 p.m.
Desroches said the airport is back to operating at full capacity, but people may experience delays when picking up passengers.
Nav Canada said it didn’t yet know how many planes were diverted.
As of Friday morning, there are residual delays but only arriving flights are impacted.
