Charles and Linda Everson saw their lives pass before their eyes in an instant from something that will probably never happen to you – a cow fell on the roof of their vehicle as they drove along a highway in Washington State.
The couple had made the long trek to Manson, Washington from their native Michigan as part of the celebration of their first anniversary. But they were hardly prepared for a 600-pound cow to suddenly appear quite literally from the blue. The year-old animal apparently fell off a 200-foot cliff just as they were passing by and landed right on the hood of their vehicle, leaving extensive damage.
As terrible as the accident was, the Eversons were lucky. If their car had been going even a kilometre or two faster, they might not be around to tell the tale. “If the cow had fallen a split second later, the animal would have landed right in their laps,” notes Jeff Middleton of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Department.
The 49-year-old driver recalls he didn’t see any sign of problems until the moment of impact. “I don’t believe this. I don’t believe this,” Charles Everson kept repeating over and over. The couple was checked out at a local hospital and both escaped their remarkable ordeal without any injuries.
The cow, which had somehow wandered eight kilometres away from its home two days earlier, wasn’t quite so fortunate. The animal was so badly injured, veterinarians couldn’t save it and it had to be euthanized.
