MPL Cuts offers gender-free cuts

Generally, when a woman walks into a hair salon, they are likely paying more for a cut.

But, a barber boutique in Kensington Market is doing things differently by offering gender-free cuts.

MPL Cuts owner Tyler Lumb said, “We know there are multiple genders, not just male or female. When we start our consultation, we, of course, ask what type of haircut someone wants and also what pronoun they want to be referred to.”

Chuck Hopper, who prefers the pronoun “they” said, “I come here and I get a really good cut and I feel safe.”

Lumb said standard cuts cost $35. If it’s a hairstyle that takes longer or is more complicated, then it will cost more.

One Toronto woman said, “I take my son for a haircut and it costs $25 while he has to sit in the chair for 45 minutes. Meanwhile for me, my trim costs double the price and only takes 15 minutes. It’s ridiculous.”

MPL Cuts is open to everyone and through charity events, offers free haircuts to those in need.
