Serena pulls out of Monterrey with ankle injury

MEXICO CITY — Serena Williams has pulled out of next week’s Monterrey Open.

Tournament organizers said on Saturday they were told of the withdrawal by the WTA and said the American turned down a wild card invitation because of an ankle injury picked up in a recent practice.

Williams played the Fed Cup this month and won two matches when the United States defeated Belarus.

Williams withdrew from the Brisbane International in early January with an injured left ankle, but went on to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open.
