Cops Find Stolen Car With 6-Month-Old Inside

The parents of a six-month-old baby will have quite a story to tell him when he grows up – about the day a car thief drove off with him in the back seat. But now everyone is breathing a sigh of relief, after the child was safely recovered and a suspect collared in Newmarket.

The scare began just after the start of rush hour Monday afternoon when a car parked outside a home at Yonge and Davis Drive disappeared with the infant still in the back seat. His frantic parents called police pleading for help and their response was instant, deploying nine cruisers and the police chopper to aid in the hunt for the missing red Mazda 3 and its precious cargo.

“She went in the house for approximately, anywhere from a minute to a minute and a half, came out and her vehicle was gone,” said York Regional Police Det. Sgt. Ross Price.

After a half hour of searching, the distraught parents were told the best news possible – cops had located the vehicle, the suspect and the baby, all unharmed.

Officers cornered the man after the vehicle spun out on the southbound 400 near the Rutherford ramp. A short foot chase followed but authorities caught up to him and hauled him down, while other lawmen recovered the child which they say the man may not even have known was in the back seat.

Charged with theft of the car and engaging a police in a pursuit is 37-year-old Viet Nguyen.
