A freight train hauling agricultural chemicals derailed in Columbus, Ohio early on Wednesday morning and burst into flames, sending heavy plumes of smoke into the sky.
The accident happened near the Ohio state fairgrounds in the state capital.
Aerial images of the site showed several train cars lying in a pile as flames shot up into the darkness.
Two people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The accident prompted evacuations in a mile-wide area and officials set up a shelter at the fairgrounds for residents who were forced to leave their homes.
There was no word on what caused the train to derail and what material was burning in the overturned cars.
