It was the end of a long day for many but for those who took the 401 home on Tuesday, it was about to get even longer. The express lanes reopened just after 6pm, more than two hours after a terrible and inexplicable accident shut down part of the always jammed highway near the Allen.
It happened just before 4pm , when a tractor trailer and a delivery truck collided, ejecting the driver of the smaller vehicle, which flipped on its side. The injured man was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with life threatening injuries. Fortunately, the man in the big rig wasn’t hurt.
But the commuting plans of thousands were thrown into chaos, as police closed the express lanes and all the onramps from Bayview to the Allen. The back-up was extensive and was made worse when drivers in the westbound lanes – which remained open – slowed down to have a longer look.
There’s no word yet on what caused the crash or whether charges will be laid.
