A 55-year-old man has been seriously injured following a crash in Markham that began as a police pursuit.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Toronto police began following a vehicle of interest in the area of Steeles Avenue and Bathurst Street on Saturday afternoon.

The pursuit took them through into Markham, where the vehicle managed to flee through the parking lot of the Markham Stouffville Hospital.

The SIU says just after 5 p.m., the vehicle was travelling westbound on Highway 7 when it collided with an eastbound car near Wootten Way.

A 55-year-old man who was in the eastbound vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU did not indicate if the driver of the vehicle that was fleeing police had been arrested or what charges they may be facing.

“At this time, two officers from TPS have been designated as subject officers. In addition, 12 officers from TPS and one officer from York Regional Police have been designated as witness officers,” the SIU said in a statement released Sunday morning.

The SIU is automatically called in to investigate any incidents involving police where there are serious injuries, deaths or allegations of sexual assault.
