Troy Glaus’ 1,000 th hit of his career helped propel the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-3 win over the outgunned Kansas City Royals on Friday.
Glaus’ milestone hit came in the first when he cracked a single up the middle to score Frank Catalanotto and Vernon Wells, giving the Jays an early lead.
While Glaus was celebrating a key moment in his nine-year career, Shaun Marcum was basking in the glow of his first win in six starts.
“It’s nice to beat your hometown team,” said the 24-year-old Marcum, who was raised in Kansas City. “I wish them the best of luck. I’ve always been a Royals fan my whole life so to beat them is pretty special. I’m sure everybody back home was watching. I’m sure I’ll have a lot of phone calls soon.”
Marcum gave up just one run on seven hits over six innings, winning for the first time since July 23, when he collected his first career win against the Yankees.
More importantly, he pitched out of bases-loaded jams to keep the Jays on track for a well-deserved victory.
“I wanted to come out and show the guys that my last start was behind me,” said Marcum, referring to his outing against Baltimore in which he gave up nine runs over 4 1-3 innings. “I wanted to come out and prove that I can pitch at this level and pitch with this team.”
The Jays scored twice more in the bottom of the second after John McDonald tripled to score Aaron Hill. Reed Johnson then drove him in on a sacrifice fly.
Kansas City’s Luke Hudson (6-5) allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits over six innings.
