If Tom Glavine’s washed up, he’s the best washed up pitcher in the history of baseball.
The 40-year-old veteran tossed another playoff gem Thursday night, this time throwing seven very strong innings of four-hit baseball that lifted his New York Mets to a 2-0 Game 1 NLCS victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.
Glavine extended his post-season shutout streak to 13 innings, and Carlos Beltran brought a sellout crowd of 56,311 at Shea Stadium to its feet with a two-run shot that hit the scoreboard in the sixth inning.
Other than that, Cardinals starter Jeff Weaver was solid going the first 5 2/3 innings allowing only one hit. But Paul Lo Duca reached on a single with two outs, allowing Beltran to crush one an estimated 430 feet into the frigid New York night.
And two runs were more than enough when Glavine was absolutely throwing daggers.
He got help in the form of two inning-ending double plays and a sparkling catch by super sub Endy Chavez (pictured), but he also dominated St. Louis all-star Albert Pujols and surrendered only two walks.
Guillermo Mota worked a hitless eighth and Billy Wagner got three outs for his third save of the playoffs.
It was Glavine’s 34 th post-season start, matching a mark set by Andy Pettitte for the most in major league history.
Game 2 goes Friday night and will feature Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter against rookie right-hander John Maine for New York.
