Major Traffic Troubles Shut Down The 401 Saturday Morning

Major traffic troubles shut down part of the eastbound 401 for hours Saturday morning. After a terrible accident, the busy route was closed at James Snow Parkway in Milton. It has since reopened.

“Eastbound from Highway 25 towards James Snow, it’s a giant parking lot,” confirmed OPP Sgt Cam Woolley.

The crash occurred when an eastbound Pontiac Fiero slammed into a Volvo that was parked on the side of the highway around 4:30am, according to police. Both vehicles were destroyed by the impact.

Luckily, no one was in the Volvo at the time. However, there were two occupants inside the Pontiac.

“The Fiero is a little mid-engine sports car made in the ’80s,” Sgt Woolley explained.

“The Fiero slammed into the back of an unattended Volvo convertible and the front seat and the passenger seat in the Fiero is crushed right in. The dashboard is almost touching the back of the seat so it’s amazing that [anyone] has survived.”

A 20-year-old male passenger was trapped for over an hour. He was later airlifted to hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

A 23-year-old Mississauga man is charged with impaired driving causing bodily injury.

Sgt Woolley cautioned other drivers heading out to enjoy the warm sun and the open road that the OPP is watching, especially for speeders.

The warm weather is “when we do a lot of impoundments for aggressive driving and street racing,” he warned.

He also reminded boaters that alcohol and water don’t mix, and it can be as deadly as drinking and driving on the roads
