High E. coli levels close 5 Toronto beaches

By News Staff

Five of Toronto’s supervised public beaches are currently closed after high levels of E. coli were detected in the waters.

The City of Toronto says it is currently unsafe to swim at Marie Curtis Park East Beach, Sunnyside Beach, Cherry Beach and Hanlan’s Point and Ward’s Island beaches.

“Swimming is not recommended during and after storms, floods, or heavy rainfall,” the City advises on its website. “Cloudy water can be an indicator of high levels of bacteria that may pose a risk to human health.”

It’s not yet clear when the beaches will reopen. The City tests the water daily and posts results here.

Rogue Beach is also closed due to a lack of lifeguard service.

“Parks Canada and the City of Toronto are working in partnership to restore a supervised swim program with lifeguards at Rouge Beach,” the City website states.

No reopening date has been confirmed.

“Swimming at Rouge Beach is currently not recommended until lifeguard services can be restored.”
