Comebacks And Tributes Mark 49th Grammy Awards

On a night intended to celebrate the best in music, it was the Godfather of Soul, the reigning queen of rhythm and blues and three country and western princesses that got most of the attention.

A reunion by the Police set the tone for the night as one of comebacks and old-school performances, and chief among them were the Dixie Chicks and R&B diva Mary J. Blige, who combined for a total of eight awards.

Blige had a leading eight nominations going into the night, and snapped up prizes for best R&B album, best R&B vocal performance and best R&B song.

“This the first time I’ve ever been up here to receive anything,” Blige said while fighting back tears.

“For so many years I’ve been talked about negatively and this time I am being talked about positively by so many people,” said Blige, whose past includes well-publicized substance abuse problems.

“I’m going to use this success to build bridges, not to burn.”

The Dixie Chicks’ hit it even bigger snagging five trophies, including one for best country album for their politically tinged, “Taking the Long Way,” and the last and most significant award of the night, best album.

“Well, to quote the great `Simpsons:’ heh-heh!” front woman Natalie Maines said to laughter and applause, referring to a snide taunt oft-heard on the animated show.

The win undoubtedly provided a sense of vindication for the group, following a conservative-led backlash that erupted when Maines criticized U.S. President George W. Bush’s leadership.

Bandmate Emily Robison thanked the trio’s fans for staying with them through death threats, public CD burnings and a boycott by some radio stations.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers also did very well, scooping four awards including best rock song, best rock performance by a duo or group and best rock album.

But as with any award show, the best parts weren’t the speeches, they were performances, and the show kicked off with a great one when the Police performed their classic hit “Roxanne,” 23 years after the group split up.

Sting even clasped hands with bandmates Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers to take a bow at the end of the song for the cheering crowd at Los Angeles Staples Center .

And then came the tributes. Justin Timberlake offered a nod to music’s digital age with a performance that ended with him filming himself onstage, joined by unknown singer selected by Internet and text message voting.

And the late James Brown received several verbal tributes, and one astounding musical one from Christina Aguilera, who performed his hit, “It’s A Man’s World” and received a standing ovation for her impressive efforts.

Prior to the show, Nova Scotia ‘s Gordie Sampson grabbed a Grammy for Canada , picking up best country song for “Jesus Take the Wheel.”

“Thank you so much,” Sampson said. “This is quite an honour.”

Things weren’t so rosy for other Canadians, including Vancouver crooner Michael Buble and Sarah McLachlan, who both came away empty-handed.
