Canadian Grand Prix Dropped From 2009 Schedule

Racing fans in Canada received some disheartening news on Tuesday when it was announced that the Canadian Grand Prix was officially dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar.

It’s the first time since 1987 that the Canadian event won’t be on the yearly schedule.  The first race north of the border took place in 1967, and since then, racing fans have eagerly awaited the high-speed action.

The Canadian race, usually held in Montreal , will be replaced by the inaugural Abu Dhabi GP.

Apparently contractual problems between Circuit Gilles Villeneuve officials and commercial rights holder F1 management contributed to the event being dropped.

The decision will mark the first time North America will be without a Formula One race in 43 years.
