Soldier Killed In Truck Rollover At CFB Petawawa

The military is investigating an accident that left one reservist soldier dead and four others seriously injured at C-F-B Petawawa, Ontario.

A truck carrying 10 reservists rolled over during a training exercise yesterday, killing gunner Arielle Keyes-Oliver.

She was a member of 30th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, a reserve unit based in Ottawa.

Base commander Lieutenant Colonel William Moore says three of the injured soldiers are being treated in an Ottawa hospital, and the fourth in nearby Pembroke, Ontario.

Moore says “they are in stable condition, and things are looking well.”

The injured soldiers are identified as Second Lieutenant Ryan MacIntyre, Bombardier Jordan Anstey, Bombardier Frederic Koch, Bombardier Alexander Mullaly.

Moore says reservists frequently train on the weekend, adding Petawawa, which is 130-kilometres west of Ottawa, is the closest large training base for reservists based in the capital.

Meanwhile, a Canadian soldier is recovering from injuries suffered in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan.

Military spokesman Major Jay Janzen says the blast came as the soldier was patrolling in a Light Armoured Vehicle in the Arghandab district southwest of Kandahar City about 1:45pm Saturday.

Janzen says a security cordon was quickly established and the soldier was flown by helicopter to the hospital at Kandahar Air Field, where he remains.

The soldier is in serious but stable condition.

Next of kin have been notified and the identity of the soldier will not be released.

Such blasts are a daily occurrence in Afghanistan and have accounted for 40 of Canada’s 97 fatalities in the war-torn country.
