Victim Of Boxing Day Shooting Recalls Terror

Another victim of gun violence took the stand Monday at the Jane Creba murder trial.

Helen Yiu was wounded during the Boxing Day shootout that claimed Creba’s life, and led to 9 people being charged in the case.  The second degree murder trial for a man who can only be identified as J.S.R. because he was underage at the time, is currently underway.  It is the first trial to go to court in the ongoing case.

Yiu showed CityNews the bullet wound to her upper thigh just days after the 2005 shooting.  Before she was shot the then-20-year-old testified she saw sparks on the sidewalk and said it looked like ‘sandbags’ — a Chinese toy that explodes when thrown on the ground.

Yiu testified through a translator Monday, telling the court that she was between the Pizza Pizza and Foot Locker on Yonge St., when she was shot.

She said she felt pain and numbness in her right thigh and left ankle, and tried to run but couldn’t due to her injuries.

She also told jurors she managed to grab a door handle and pull her body up while terrified holiday shoppers ran by her.  Wounded, she entered the Foot Locker and saw a large pool of blood inside the store.
