The Next Big Indie Movie You’ve Never Heard Of

Bucking the convention that creating buzz is important to a movie’s success, the makers of a quirky independent film don’t want you to know about it.

“Paper Hearts,” described by some accounts as part documentary, part scripted comedy, stars Brampton native Michael Cera (“Juno”) and revolves around his real-life relationship with actress Charlyne Yi (“Knocked Up”). The two Judd Apatow protégés team up with a third, first-time director Nicholas Jasenovec, who is expected to premiere the film in January at the Sundance Film Festival.

According to one report, insiders are touting this film as “the one.” But the film’s promoters, United Talent Agency, have been careful to limit word in advance of next week’s line-up announcement.

Unlike most films, “Paper Hearts” does not have an official web site, nor is it listed on most movie databases, including Michael Cera’s IMDB page.

Many say it makes sense to keep expectations in check, after hyped movies like “What Just Happened” flopped this year at Sundance and think sellers may be hoping to repeat the success of Napoleon Dynamite, which came out of nowhere to become a runaway hit.

The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 15-25 in Park City, Utah.
