Hostage Standoff Ends Peacefully In Richmond Hill

A standoff at a Richmond Hill home has ended with the safe release of a hostage and the arrest of a man accused of holding him captive for more than two hours.

It’s still not clear what lead to the dispute that had York Regional Police cordon off a wide area surrounding Newkirk and Crosby Ave., between Bayview and Yonge and Elgin Mills Rd. E.

It started at 11:50am Friday as a domestic situation when a woman called authorities following an argument with her boyfriend, a man in his 60s.

They’d been involved in some kind of dispute which may have turned threatening and the woman was able to make it out of the house unscathed.

Her 21-year-old nephew wasn’t as lucky, allegedly being held by the man who was believed to be armed.

Heavily armed members of the Emergency Rescue Unit, the force’s version of our ETF, set up a wide perimeter in the area, keeping traffic and residents out, as they phoned the suspect inside the home and negotiated an end to the siege.

After finally reaching him on a cell phone, the man was convinced to come out around 2pm.

Police confirm there was a weapon involved but won’t say if it was legally registered.

The suspect is facing charges of confinement, assault, and assault with a weapon. Neither he nor the man he allegedly held hostage was hurt.
