An early-morning 911 call turned into an SIU investigation Sunday in Mississauga.
Peel Region officers were called to an apartment building at 28 Helene Street around 1am.
According to a Special Investigations Unit press release, a woman dialed the number because she heard a man on the 5th floor yelling and throwing items off his balcony to the parking lot below.
When police arrived, they confronted the man in the hallway. It’s unclear what happened next but the outcome is certain: He was fatally shot outside his mother’s apartment by a member of Peel Region. No officers were hurt.
“When police arrived, they went to the 5th floor hallway. And it was in that hallway, near the stairwell door, that a confrontation took place between the man and Peel Regional Police,” described SIU spokesperson John Yoannou.”
The victim was later identified as Gregory Moynagh, 25.
Neighbour Nick Seeger expressed his surprise over the incident. “We’ve lived here for six months. All of a sudden there’s somebody shot in the hallway. So we didn’t expect it at all. It seemed perfectly safe here.”
When the SIU arrived Sunday, they found two knives at the scene. Seven staff members, including four field investigators and three forensic investigators, are looking into the sequence of events that resulted in the shooting.
A post-mortem is scheduled for Monday.
