Chain-Reaction Crash Sends Six To Hospital

A chain-reaction crash in the westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway Saturday morning sent six people to hospital including two victims who remain in serious condition.

The accident unfolded around 4:20am just west of Jameson, where a coach bus rear-ended an Oldsmobile Alero, which had stopped due to an unrelated incident. That vehicle was subsequently pinned beneath a pick-up truck, which in turn went careening into an Acura.

The driver of the Oldsmobile was trapped and had to be freed using the Jaws of Life.

In all, six people were rushed to hospital with two taken to a trauma centre. One of the victims was initially listed as critical but their injuries have since been downgraded to non-life threatening. The bus had no passengers on board at the time.

Reconstruction crews were on the scene throughout the morning and the stretch of road remained closed until around 12pm.

Police are reminding drivers that the arrival of some warm weather is no excuse for being reckless behind the wheel.

“We had a couple of collisions that were minor ones on the go. And they were followed up with fairly serious collisions,” noted Sgt. Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police. “When the weather gets nicer, the roads are drier and the temperature is a little higher, people seem to forget common sense.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
