WASHINGTON – U.S. President Obama has jumped out into a big lead in the American presidential race.
He has 229 electoral votes of the 270 he needs to win.
Republican challenger Mitt Romney is trailing with 190.
The big spike was expected as projections from West Coast states rolled in, traditionally Democrat strongholds.
Obama also has won Minnesota, despite a late Republican push in the state.
Romney meantime, won in North Carolina and Arizona, where both campaigns had worked to wrap up the state’s 15 electoral votes.
