Why do Canadians obsess over the weather?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We constantly think about it, watch it, talk about it and grumble about it. Why are Canadians so obsessed with the weather?

Senior Climatologist David Phillips with Environment Canada believes it is one of the things that cements us together. Across the country, weather can be extreme and it changes on a dime.

“It really is the spice of life! When you see two Canadians together, they are not talking about Paris Hilton’s latest adventure or the rise and fall of the dollar. It’s all about how long it took to get home last night or how thick the ice was on the the windshield this morning. We are the weather people.”

Phillips says Canadian weather is hard to predict, we all depend on it and there’s never a dull moment. “We’ve been called the second most boring country in the word next to Singapore, probably because we chat [about it] all the time. Every conversation begins and ends with a weather reference, and all the blowing we do doesn’t stop that weather from coming.”

Phillips, who has a soft spot for extreme weather events, says it is part of who we are as Canadians.
