Toronto decorates for the holidays; outdoor rinks officially open

TORONTO, On. – With exactly three weeks left until Christmas Day, many people have begun stringing up lights before heading out to finish their holiday shopping.

On Queen Street, “The Bay” windows depict the scenes of Christmas, with miniature moving people decorating trees, a mouse family sleeping under floor boards, and Santa at the dinner table while his elves work through the night.

Walking down Yonge Street, a glowing sleigh sits near College, illuminated trees lineup on Dundas, and inside the Eaton’s Centre it’s truly is a winter wonderland.

At 7 p.m. every night, except Sundays, the mall is transformed into an indoor snow globe.

“Our overhead lights will turn on, and the music will begin, and as you stand around the tree snow will actually start to fall from over 100 feet high,” Catherine Melchior, Senior Director of Marketing for the Eaton Centre, said.

Matthew Rosenblatt, a partner in district owners Cityscape Development, said the Distillery District is like a blast from the past, with a 1950’s Christmas.

“It’s older, it’s a slower time, more romantic, less commercial,” he said. “The 1950’s style bulb just really pulls at your heartstrings.”

But if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, perhaps one of the 51 Toronto outdoor skating rinks, which officially opened Saturday, will.
