More than a dozen Chicago firefighters injured, two dead while fighting fire

CHICAGO – A spokesman in the Cook County medical office confirmed to CNN that two firefighters were killed and more than a dozen firefighters were injured due to a wall that collapsed during a fire at an abandoned commercial building in Chicago.

Four firefighters were pulled from rubble while dozens rescue workers continued to search for others that were caught inside.

Fire officials said 10 of the firefighters are in serious condition and six are in critical condition.

The department sent out a “mayday” call Wednesday morning when the firefighters were unaccounted for at the scene.

Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the union stock yards fire that killed 21 Chicago firefighters.
