VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Should downtown businesses be going after the City of Vancouver for damages sustained from last week’s riot? Mayor Gregor Robertson says it’s too soon to be talking about that.
“It is premature for any pursuit around damages and liability,” says Mayor Robertson. He says the city is working with businesses right now as they get back up and running.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if businesses look at the legal side of this and the insurance component of it. It has been a real impact for many businesses and they’ve got to look at what their next steps are.”
Meantime a Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, VanLovers Appreciation Map, has created a map highlighting businesses directly impacted by the riots. The map calls on Vancouverites to show their support by shopping downtown.
Identifying rioters
ICBC says it has the blessing of BC’s privacy commissioner to help police identify people who rioted in Vancouver last Wednesday.
The crown corporation says it’s been given the green light to let police use their facial recognition technology. Vancouver Police are wading through thousands of photos and videos to try to track down rioters and looters.
VPD criticisms
Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu is taking aim at the man who some have credited for writing the 1994 report into the Stanley Cup riot. Bob Whitelaw has been critical of the VPD’s handling of Wednesday night’s riot and Chu is now attacking his credibility.
In an email to everyone at the VPD, Chu says the police commission threw out Whitelaw’s report because it was inadequate and unrealistic. He claims it was re-written without Whitelaw.
Chu goes on to say Whitelaw’s comments are destructive and fraudulent. Chu isn’t giving interviews today.
