Chretien pushes for Liberal/NDP merger

OTTAWA – Once again former Prime Minister Jean Chretien is trying to unite the two left leaning parties in Canada.

Chretien is making another pitch to merge the Liberals and New Democrats.  He first threw out the idea in September.

To the former PM the move is all about political stability. He believes the merger would end the trend of minority and slim majority governments, like those that have been in place for the last decade.

The Grits are greatly outnumbered by the NDP in the House of Commons but Chretien does not believe this would be a take over of his party.

“In a new party this does not matter anymore. It’s intellectual capacity that would make the difference,” he explained.

Chretien is still pushing for the union even though he doesn’t always see eye to eye with the NDP. He disagrees with the party’s position that it would launch negotiations for Quebec independence even if there is a bare majority in a referendum.
