Tragic weekend on Ontario roads: OPP

TORONTO, Ont. – The OPP have released the final statistics for the Canada Day long weekend blitz, and despite constant appeals to the public to drive safe, there were double the number of fatalities on the roads and waterways from last year’s Canada Day weekend.

A total of 16 people died, with 12 of those deaths resulting from highway collisions.

Two died in marine incidents, and another two were killed in all terrain vehicle crashes.

Police laid a total of 7,100 charges, with speeding offences counting for 4,300 of the final total.

80 tickets or charges were issued for street racing.
