A 19-year-old faces a second-degree murder charge after a 15-year-old boy died and two other young men were hurt following a triple stabbing outside a North York high school.
Police received calls about a stabbing during a fight at Victoria Park Collegiate, near York Mills and Victoria Park, shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officers located two victims — a 14 and 16-year-old, both males — at the scene and a third victim a short time later nearby. One of the victims, a 15-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other boys suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
On Wednesday, police identified the victim as 15-year-old Maahir Dosani of Toronto.
Officers arrested a 19-year-old man shortly after the incident. He was identified as Ahmed Rafin, also of Toronto. Rafin has been charged with second-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court today.
The altercation took place shortly after classes let out for the day. Police have confirmed with CityNews the three victims were students of the school. The 19-year-old man in custody was not.
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) says the school will be open on Wednesday, and grief counsellors will be on hand.
In a letter issued to parents and guardians through the TDSB, Victoria Park Collegiate Principal Rick Tarasuk says their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
“Understandably, this incident is upsetting for many students,” he wrote. “Ensuring the safety for our students and staff is our top priority for our school, and we will continue to take any necessary steps to ensure our students and staff are safe.”
Tarasuk says in the letter that while police believe there is no further threat to the school or public safety, officers will be at the school on Wednesday to help further the investigation.
On Wednesday, Mayor John Tory took to Twitter, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward.
“It is heartbreaking to know a 15-year-old boy died after a stabbing at Victoria Park Collegiate. On behalf of all of the people of the City of Toronto, I extend deepest condolences to his family and friends and the entire school community,” Tory wrote.
“I encourage anyone with information about this tragedy to contact Toronto Police.”
