Virtual memorial to be held in honour of Canadian host, comedian Candy Palmater

By The Canadian Press and Lucas Casaletto

Details about a virtual memorial will be shared as soon as they’re arranged to pay tribute to Indigenous comedian Candy Palmater.

The actress, host of APTN’s “The Candy Show,” and frequent co-host of the CTV talk show “The Social” died suddenly at her Toronto home Christmas morning at age 53.

Palmater’s manager and partner of 22 years, Denise Tompkins tells the Canadian Press that Palmater had been diagnosed this month with the rare disease Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), which is characterized by inflammation that can impact organs including the heart and kidneys.

There is no cause of death as of Monday.

Tompkins said Palmater had been sick for years but had been recently released from a 16-day hospital stay and looked to be improving before she died in her bed while reading a book.

She calls her a very rare gem that our world lost way too early.

Palmater was born in Point La Nim, New Brunswick and eventually became the first Aboriginal law student in Canada to be valedictorian of her graduating class at Dalhousie, and was president of the Dalhousie Aboriginal Law Students Association.
