Toronto cancels 1 fireworks event, reschedules other, after vendor backs out: City

If you have been planning to head to Stan Wadlow Park or Milliken Park Friday night to watch the fireworks, you’ll have to find another spot to celebrate Canada Day.

The City of Toronto said on Friday morning that those events have been rescheduled and cancelled.

The City said its fireworks vendor responsible for the displays at Ashbridges Bay Park, Stan Wadlow Park and Milliken Park contacted it the day before and the vendor, “did not intend to fulfill its contractual obligation to perform fireworks displays.”

The fireworks are still a go at Ashbridges Bay Park, Mel Lastman Square and Downsview Park, the City said, and the Canada Day fireworks that were planned for Stan Wadlow Park have been rescheduled for Saturday, but the fireworks at Milliken Park have been cancelled.

“The City intends to hold the vendor responsible for all damages or costs incurred as a result of this breach of contract,” it said.

Crediting staff working through the day and night to secure a new vendor, the City said it was able to secure services through a new company to allow the fireworks to happen at Ashbridges Bay Friday night and the display set for Stan Wadlow Park on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the City is reminding Torontonians planning to set off their own fireworks, displays are only permitted until 11 p.m. on Canada Day on residents’ private property and only personal fireworks are not allowed to be set off in City parks, beaches, streets, parking lots, balconies and property not owned by the person setting off the fireworks.

“The City asks that people be mindful of their surroundings and not discharge fireworks where they may be a nuisance or pose a risk of fire, injury or damage to any person or property,” it added.
