Barrie police have provided a few more details surrounding the fatal crash that claimed the lives of six young adults more than a week ago.
In a statement released Thursday, investigators say they have determined the crash occurred just after 6 a.m. on August 27 at McKay Road just east of County Road 27, near Barrie’s southwest border.
“It is believed the deceased persons were traveling to a nearby casino,” police said.
Local residents told CityNews McKay Road is often used as a shortcut to get to and from the casino.
The young group of adults — Curtis King, 22, River Wells, 23, Jason O’Connor, 22, Luke West, 22, Jersey Mitchell and Haley Marin — were reported missing August 27 when family members hadn’t heard from them.
Police are asking anyone who may have travelled along McKay Road, in the area currently under construction, between late afternoon August 26 and 2:00 a.m. August 28 – when the collision was located – to contact them.

“It just doesn’t make any sense,” resident Cathy Lebel told CityNews. “There isn’t enough signage that doesn’t stop people from driving. It says ‘Local traffic only.’ Well, what’s local? I am local.”
The City of Barrie has said the intersection had been closed since the spring, and the area is currently the site of a municipal construction project according to chief administrative officer Michael Prowse.
There’s been no further update from the city as to its investigation.
