A freezing rain warning has ended for the GTA on Tuesday but there is the potential for snow for later this week.

The national weather agency says the precipitation was expected to arrive early in the morning and change to light rain by late morning or early afternoon.

“A few millimetres of ice accretion is possible on some surfaces,” the warning stated.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Slow down driving in slippery conditions.”

Environment Canada issued the freezing rain warning for Toronto and the GTA on Monday. It was lifted for Toronto early Tuesday morning and then for other areas of the GTA later in the morning.

School buses were cancelled for all zones in Durham Region for both the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic School Board. Schools remain open in the region.

In Halton Region, school buses are cancelled in Zone 3, Halton Hills, for both boards.

After the freezing rain moves out, it could be replaced with snow later this week.

CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor said a potential winter storm is brewing, which could bring snow Wednesday overnight, along with strong winds on Thursday. The snow may changeover to rain again depending on the temperature.

The City of Vaughan has also declared a significant weather event for Tuesday morning amidst the freezing rain warning.

“The City is reminding residents to take precautions, including delaying travel when possible and staying clear of downed trees and powerlines,” read a release.
