‘He’s killing him’: Video shows terrifying reaction to subway stabbing

A video obtained by CityNews shows terrified commuters scrambling for safety after a stabbing on a subway train that was approaching Eglinton Station on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was originally reported to have critical injuries, but in an update Toronto Police said his condition is now considered stable.

As the video begins, two men can be faintly heard arguing out of frame. Moments later, the camera pans towards the men — one wearing shorts and a white T-shirt, the other in dark pants and a dark green hooded sweater.

The man in the white T-shirt appears to throw the first punch, and they both start swinging wildly at each other.

As the battle commences, a blotch of blood can be seen soaking through the side of the victim’s white T-shirt.

Seeming to realize he’s been stabbed, he turns and starts desperately running down the subway train screaming for help as commuters look on aghast.

His assailant chases him down the train, a knife visible in his hand, and they disappear out of the camera’s view behind a trail of blood.

But the reaction of stunned commuters hints at what occurred out of frame.

“He’s stabbing him up! He’s killing him! He’s killing him!” one rider can be heard saying as occupants on the train try to scurry to safety.

The riders rush to the subway doors, waiting for them to open as the train approaches Eglinton Station.

Before the video ends, the suspect can be seen casually walking along the subway platform, carrying a backpack.

Toronto Police Duty Insp. Michelle Olszevski called it an “isolated incident” stemming from a verbal disagreement.

“This is not believed to be random,” she said in an update Thursday night, adding that it’s unclear if the two were known to each other prior to the confrontation.

Police confirm they were called to the station around 12:30 p.m., and located the victim on scene with multiple stab wounds.

The suspect remains at large.

He’s described as Black, 25-30 years of age, between five foot ten and six feet tall with a thin build and a shaved head. He was last seen wearing black jeans, a green hooded sweatshirt with “GAP” written on the front, black shoes and black and gold sunglasses. He was also wearing a green back pack while carrying a black one.

Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw said he was “disturbed” by the violence on the subway system.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe while on transit and we continue to support all public safety needs in partnership with the TTC,” he tweeted Thursday night.

Eglinton Station was closed for more than seven hours as police investigated, with shuttle buses running between Lawrence and Davisville stations.

Regular subway service resumed just after 8 p.m.

“This afternoon, the TTC learned a stabbing victim was located inside our Eglinton Station. Our thoughts are with the victim at this uncertain time,” a TTC spokesperson said.

“Safety of our customers and employees is paramount to all we do. While we don’t have any more information, incidents of violence on TTC property are unacceptable and of great concern.”
