Toronto driver charged with impaired, had 2-year-old in car at time of arrest

A Toronto driver with a G1 licence was arrested after they were pulled over on suspicion of impaired driving, with officers finding a young child in the car with them.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Toronto pulled the driver over on Tuesday. A precise location was not immediately provided.

The OPP Highway Safety Division said a driver with a G1 licence was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. A two-year-old child was in the car with the driver at the time. The youth was not injured.

An OPP spokesperson said the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was two-time’s the legal limit. Officers did not identify the driver.

In Ontario, a G1 driver must be accompanied by a driver over 18 who has held their full, unrestricted licence for at least four years.

The driver in the passenger seat must maintain a blood alcohol level under the legal limit — in Ontario, that limit is .05 per cent. Under provincial guidelines, there can’t be anyone else in the vehicle’s front seatsbesidesn the G1 driver and their fully licensed companion.

G1-class drivers can also not drive on 400-series highways with a posted speed limit of over 80 km/h.
