A construction worker has serious life-altering injuries after a car drove through an apparent road closure on a Toronto highway early Tuesday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says the worker was hit in a construction zone in the eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401 approaching Victoria Park Avenue around 3:30 a.m.
According to records from the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), the stretch of highway where the worker was struck had been closed for construction since 11 p.m. Monday night.
Paramedics confirm a man was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police tell CityNews other workers at the site applied a tourniquet to the victim’s severely injured leg before paramedics arrived, likely saving his life.

The vehicle involved in the crash did not remain at the scene.
Investigators say they are looking for a black Corvette that will have damage. OPP say witnesses reported seeing the car travelling southbound at high speeds on Warden Avenue shortly after the collision.
“If you are that driver, or if you have information as to who the driver may be, please call the Toronto OPP,” says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
The Ministry of Labour has been notified and are investigating the worker’s injury.
The eastbound 401 collectors lanes were closed for several hours but all lanes have since reopened.
