A 68-year-old man was killed by a car in Scarborough during a perilous day on the roads that also saw at least five other crashes involving pedestrians and vehicles.
The collision that killed the pedestrian happened around 8 a.m. Thursday at Sheppard Avenue East and Kennedy Road.
“The pedestrian was possibly at or in the centre median crossing area,” Const. Clint Stibbe said.
“Unfortunately, the size of the vehicle versus the type of barrier that’s at this particular location wouldn’t afford him much protection,” he added.
The victim didn’t have vital signs when paramedics arrived on scene. He was revived but later died in hospital, Stibbe said.
Witness Leica Angeles tried to help him but was unsuccessful.
“He was bleeding from his nose and everything. I called 911,” she told CityNews. “But I was trying to wake him up. I was yelling at him. He just didn’t want to wake up.”
Police are withholding his name while his family was being notified.
The driver told CityNews he never saw the victim.
“I feel so bad, so bad,” said Luis who didn’t provide his surname. “Everything changed. I have to take the consequences, I think.”
There’s no word on possible charges.
Later Thursday, a female cyclist was struck in Milton at Derry Road West and Thompson Road South. She was taken to a local hospital to be assessed, while the driver remained at the scene and co-operated with police.
A 15-year-old boy suffered critical head injuries when he was struck by a car at Kennedy and Eglinton.
There were also three separate minor accidents involving pedestrians in York Region early Thursday evening.
Weather was considered a factor.
It’s been a terrible year for crashes involving pedestrians. Another 68-year-old man was killed Tuesday night in a collision on Kingston Road near Morningside Avenue.
Twenty-two pedestrians have been killed so far this year, up from 17 in 2011.
A woman was hit by a TTC bus Wednesday night, but luckily suffered only minor injuries.
