The City of Mississauga has decided not to rename a downtown street meant to honour the former Prince Andrew.
Mississauga city council voted unanimously Wednesday to keep the name “Duke of York Boulevard,” which is located between Square One Shopping Centre and Sheridan College’s Hazel McCallion campus, and opted instead to “reassociate” the name, removing its connection to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
The decision will also remove all plaques and signage associated with Andrew from city-owned property.
A Mississauga councillor was pushing to remove Duke of York Boulevard from the city’s map, citing sexual abuse allegations tied to its namesake, former Prince Andrew. The street was named after him following his 1987 visit, during which he opened the city’s civic centre.
Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal titles earlier this month by King Charles III.
